Reading Insulation Labels and Specs

Reading Insulation Labels and Specs

When you’re inspecting insulation, it can be helpful to read the labels. They give important information about the insulating material and its performance. They can also tell you about any safety precautions that must be taken when handling the product or using it.

If the concrete leveling you’re looking at has a R-value, it will be shown on the label. It’s the number that indicates how much heat it resists. The higher the R-value, the better the insulating power.

You may see a chart that compares different types of insulation and gives their R-value at a particular thickness. If you do this, your ad must use the same coverage area for all of the comparisons.

Electrical wire insulating jacket markings can contain codes that describe the cable’s suitability for wet or dry locations, high heat applications, underground burial and resistance to oil & grease. These codes can be found in the table below, which also shows the ampacity or fuse/circuit breaker rating for each type of cable.

If you’re considering adding insulation, it’s a good idea to first check your attic and any unheated spaces like wall framing boards, garages or basements. Then you can find out the kind and R-value of your existing insulation and make a cost-benefit analysis.
